New Venue for Nelson Opera in the Park

Simon O'Neill - Tenor

Nelson Opera in the Park will opera by the seaside this year, with the new venue announced today as the grassed area at Tahunanui.

Nelson City Councils Festivals Producer Sophie Kelly said the venue would add to the summer flavour of the event.

"There is nothing quite as evocative of summer in Nelson as Tahunanui," she said. "We're bringing Nelson's biggest outdoor entertainment event right into the heart of ths - imagine a summer evening as the sun goes behind the hills and the orchestra takes the stage, it is going to be really very special."

Ms Kelly said the former venue of Trafalgar Park was not available as it is being revamped for the rugby world cup, and she said the organisers and sponsors were keen to keep the event in the city.

The playing fields, alongside Beach Road, will be fenced to cater for a crowd of about 15,000 opera goerso for the event on Saturday February 2010. Anna Leese - Soprano "Nelson Opera in the Park this is free, thanks to our new sponsors BioPaints, but we will be issuing tickets for security reasons and because the numbers of people that attend will be limited. "Ms Kelly said. "It also makes it just a little bit more special to have your ticket and be off to the opera!"

BioPaints Business manager Kathyrn Barlow said "She was really excited about the potential of the new venue, which fitted with the BioPaints' sponsorship aim to make Opera in the Park as accessible and fun as possible.

'I believe the beachside location will bring a whole new dimension to the event. "she said "We are urging all local businesses to get behind it and consider how they can enhance the promotion and the evening itself in ways that will make Nelson really come alive for Opera in the Park."
